James was caring for his elderly father, but found himself in a tricky situation when his father sadly passed away. Unfortunately, he didn’t have succession rights (which would have allowed him to stay in his father's home) so we needed to find James a home more suited to his needs.

With a low income as well as physical and mental health issues, he was struggling to get by. He’s entitled to Universal Credit, but after covering housing costs, he was left with less than £200 to live on.

He was referred to our Tenancy Support team, who reviewed his income and spending. They helped him to apply for Council Tax Support, the Household Support Fund and other benefits to boost his income.

Kate, from the team, helped him to:

  • Find a bungalow and get his utilities set up.
  • Set up arrangements to cover rent arrears and get debts for utility bills at his father’s home written off.
  • Get his life back on track after his father passed away.

“Kate was brilliant”, James said. “She really helped me out with things – she deserves a medal!”

Now, James is doing much better physically and with his mental health. He’s gardening, painting and enjoying retirement in his new home.
