Extracting people from abuse

How we quickly got into action when a customer reached out.

We’ve had a safeguarding & domestic abuse service since July 2023 and sadly the team deal with hundreds of cases each year, supporting both customers and colleagues through often complex personal challenges.

The team give people a safe space to reach out for support, whether that’s just giving them time to talk, emotional support or to advocate for them where possible.

Futures customer Jane* bravely opened up to one of our team last year to say she was experiencing domestic abuse. The officer referred her to our safeguarding & domestic abuse service who got in touch with her that same day.

Jane told us she didn’t feel safe to stay at home any more and we helped her to contact a domestic abuse helpline so she could find a safe refuge.

However, contact with Jane was difficult as she told us her perpetrator was always present when she makes calls, which made it unsafe for her to speak on the phone.

Our safeguarding & domestic abuse coordinator booked a private medical appointment with Jane’s local GP so we could speak to her without the perpetrator present.

After creating a safety plan and risk assessments, we removed the perpetrator from the home which led to his arrest. We supported Jane to stay safe in her home by working with the police and other agencies, before moving her into a new home so the perpetrator no longer knows where she lives.

Jane’s also continuing to make positive steps towards rebuilding her life, such as returning to work and completing courses for her career.
