Whether it’s building them, living in them, or demolishing them – homes have a big impact on the planet. Construction uses a lot of materials, energy and other resources. We spend a big part of our lives in our homes using energy to stay comfortable and to sustain ourselves. And while demolition is sometimes necessary, it can have an environmental impact that it would be better to avoid.
So as a organisation first and foremost in the homes business, we know we can and must do more for the planet. And our customers and employees tell us that sustainability and the environment matter to them too.
Living more sustainably can help our pockets too. Keeping homes warm costs money and soaring energy prices stretch many of our customers’ budgets. Many face harsh choices in the winter months between heating and eating – something we feel compelled to help with in any way that we can.
That’s why sustainability is a core theme of our corporate plan with ambitious targets to become a net zero organisation by 2025. Read on to find out about some of the ways we’ve made headway in this area during 2023-24.
